Fox River Study 2004
Students in fifth and sixth grade use Tyler Creek as part of the ecology studies they do in Science Class at Summit Academy. The collection of benthic macroinvertebrates allows students to assess the health of the stream. Kick seine nets are used to collect the critters from the bottom. Once collected the species are identified and classified according to their pollution tolerance. Using a formula devised by the local river monitoring network, students are able to tell how healthy Tyler Creek is each fall. The data collected is reported to the Fox River Monitoring Network.

Students go over instructions.

Once the kick seine net is in the water, students learn how to collect BMIs.

Different spots in the creek bring different results.

Students carry the nets up to dry land.

Students find and classify the bottom dwellers.

Students assess Tyler Creek as excellent!
