Movement is not just a great way to help your preschoolers expend all of that extra energy.
Combining variety and challenge with physical activities also helps develop the higher areas of your child’s brain.
One way to switch it up is to change the way you pass a ball. While playing catch with your child outdoors, throw the ball one way. Now, have your child think of a new way to pass the ball 10 times. Take turns thinking of new ways to pass the ball and reinforce the different approaches.
Finding yourself stuck inside for the day? Try paper plate skating. Grab some plates, step on them and skate around the house! Have some colored tape at home? You'll be amazed at all that you can have your child do. Use the tape to lay down a road for them to drive. Put a line of tape on the floor to serve as a balance beam and see how well they can move across it without "falling" off.
There are LOTS of gross motor activities to do with your child, indoors and outdoors, that are fun and can incorporate learning as well.
